Unitarian Universalist services are similar to most other churches. There are readings and hymns, often live instrumental or choral music. There is a time for people to share significant events in their lives. There is usually a story for children early in the service, before they leave the sanctuary for their classes downstairs. You are welcome to visit and to explore with us. Wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing!
Unless otherwise noted, all services and children’s religious education programs take place on Sundays between 10:30am and 11:45am. Child care is available.
We invite you to remain after the service for coffee and conversation.
Past month’s services can be found here.
6 January Nayer Taheri
|
The Stranger As her first sermon in a series of six, Nayer Taheri will share with us her life story by examining the notion of being a stranger in exile. Though we come together with many differences, we all have had the experience of feeling like a stranger in unfamiliar territory. It is everybody’s story to feel like a stranger at some point and find home in unexpected places. This sermon will examine the fundamental questions for all of us — “Who am I? and Where am I coming from?” Nayer Taheri is originally from Iran. She recently completed her Master’s degree from the Starr King School for the Ministry, a Unitarian Universalist Seminary in Berkeley , CA. She is a chaplain resident at Harborview Medical Center, a member of the steering committee of the Religious Coalition for Equality in Seattle, and an associate faculty member at Starr King, where she teaches classes on Islam. |
13 January Rev. Amanda Aikman |
A Fresh Start The beginning of a new year always suggests what Americans, of all peoples in the world, are best at: starting out fresh, turning over a new leaf, reinventing ourselves, and visioning new possibilities. Amanda will share some field-tested techniques for starting our personal lives afresh, as well as some of the reasons that new year’s resolutions so often fail; and we will share our hopes and dreams for ourselves and our world. Important congregation meeting after service. |

Ten C's of Ministry "If I were a member of a congregation about to seek a new minister, what qualities would I like to see in that person and what priorities would I assign to those qualities?" David Pohl, a previous director of the UUA's Department of Ministry, has asked that question and proposed a "top ten list" that we will take a look at. Northlake Players will be featured in this service, and the choir will sing. Welcoming Congregation Workshop 8:45-10:15am before service |

For All the Saints This is a time of transition, as Amanda shares her last sermon with us. We will be invited into a ceremony of letting go, and we will honor “all the saints” who have made us who we are today and who inspire us to live more beautiful lives. Welcoming Congregation Workshop 8:45-10:15am before service Our buildings (the church, the house, and soon the chapel) are some of the resources we use to support our mission. We use them for Northlake activities, for community activities, and to provide financial support via rentals. With the addition of the chapel – both the building and the finanicial cost – we’ve got an even richer set of resources we need to manage. Joie Goodwin and Dave Thompson will hold a short (20–30 min) sesssion after the service to talk about rentals and how the space in our buildings is managed. They’ll talk about who we rent to, the rental policies, managing Northlake vs. rental space, what’s planned for the Chapel. Please join them if you’re interested. They’ll talk for 15 mins then take questions and would love to hear any thoughts you might have. |
